Shooting it: Night shoot (Using ROGUE gear)

Another night shot taken around my neighborhood industrial area which I love shooting at! This time I’m using some new gear that I started using recently, the ROGUE accessories, and some info about them I have in the end of the article! Also one of the things I quite like doing is playing with color filters at night, well I have that here too!

Strobist Setup

For this setup I’m only using 3 strobes, all of them Nikon SB-26s! The main light for the model is with a ROGUE box accessory, right from her. I also have a couple of colored strobes with snoots behind her to color the background! I’m using red for one of them and blue filter for the other! I’m using Pocket Wizard II Plus to fire the flashes!

Gear

I’m using my Canon 5D Mark II, with Canon 135mm f/2 lens, and 3 old Nikon SB-26 strobes! You can see below in the article more detailed information about the main light in this shoot – the ROGUE FlashBender XL. Also for the background lights I’m using flash gels also by the same company, you can see them here: CLICK! For them I have also snoots on the flashes, they are also made by ROGUE, click HERE to check them out as well! It is the first shoot I was actually using them and they were quite easy to setup! Since it was quite dark, I’m using a flash-light to be able to focus! I’m using Pocket Wizard III Plus as a trigger for this shoot!

Here is the official website to get that strip-box: http://www.rogueflash.com/collections/mainproductpage/products/rogue-flashbender-xl-pro-lighting-kit

Recently this is a very important part of my gear on almost every location shoot! It is a small and compact strip box. It makes relatively hard light, but depending on how you set it it is still softer than going with just a strobe, and it makes some really nice light! I quite often use it as a main light for my model, but also I like using it as rim light from behind to add shape to my subject! Generally I tend using it mostly when I don’t need so soft light, and I want to make my images look a little cool!

What is best for the FlashBender is that it takes just a few seconds to put it on and off the set! It is so quick that I don’t need to spend much time getting ready, and cleaning up after I’m finished! Another awesome thing is that when it’s folded it takes almost no space, just fold it and stick it in your back! And the third think I like about it is that because of it’s shape it’s not influenced that much by wind as much as an umbrella or softbox would be, so I feel a bit safe to use it when I’m without assistant on location!

In the end

And now, I am preparing a series of new articles on some general topics, let me know which one of them you want to see first, so I get it ready earlier! Also other ideas are welcome too! Here are some of them:

Portraits at night / Lens article (I guess 135/2) / Portraits in the rain / Use of gels / Using backlight / One light setups / Shoots with just one umbrella / General shooting portraits / Can cheap lenses make good photos / Swing the camera shots / Using snoots / Shaped bokeh / … or any other idea welcome, post it in the comments, and I will see if I am able to write about it!
