Shooting it: Surfing at the beach!

Do you like surfing guys? I love it, basically that’s what I’m doing every day, so I wanted to take a self portrait of me doing it 😉 Damn, of course not that type of surfing haha, I can’t even swim! I really love surfing in the internet, so today decided to bring my PC stuff to the beach and play around! We were together with my friend Evgeny, thanks for help dude, it was fun shooting together! 😉

Nude Canon 580EXII in front of me pointed at the monitor. Also I have a white sheet of paper on the screen to reflect the light from the flash

Nikon SB-26 in a 90×20 Gridded Softbox – Camera Left! It was quite dark around me without that light

Both 580EXII & SB26 have a Pocket Wizard II Plus Trigger and are triggered by Phottix Atlas!

Lighting

Ok, here I am shooting myself surfing at the beach! It’s early in the morning, and we had to go there with the first train from Kobe Station, at around 5:00am. We had a pretty cold morning with temperature below 0 degrees, but as I had to carry my 5 years old 3kg HP laptop, some accessories, my external Fujitsu monitor, and on the top of it even a wooden table, well that was heavy enough to make me warm! And of course I had with me some camera equipment to make it interesting!

Setup here, main light comes from a Canon 580EXII Flash set in front of me and pointed at the laptop monitor. I’m also having a white sheet of paper set on the screen so it become a nice source of light for my face! The second flash I use to fill a little the shadows around me is set left from the camera, and I have it in a 90×20 gridded softbox. I’ve been using quite closed apperture from about F9 here and since it was getting brighter and brighter the shutter speed was changing every minute, I started from around 8 seconds, and in the end was shooting at around a second.

I’m triggering both flashes here with a Phottix Atlas trigger set on the camera, and Pocket Wizard II Plus on each flash. I purchased the Phottix Atlas trigger recently to replace as a trigger my broken pocket wizards that I can’t mount on my camera anymore.
