Shooting it: Textile Design by Arina

Here are couple of shots from a project I was a part of recently! Basically we have been using some really nice Jacquard fabric textile, that was a subject of an exhibition, and we wanted to create some nice visuals about it!  You can see some details for the lighting, and the whole preparation of the photoshoot below, and in the end I have uploaded a link to the full gallery on my Flickr account!

STROBIST INFO:

To make it easy I will put the lighting setup for both shots in one image, and I will talk about both images there! Lighting is very similar, with just a little change with the adding of another flash for shot B.

Shot A. So in the first shot, I am using onl one light you can see it in the setup shot from the right side, it is a reflective umbrella, with a Canon 580 EXII flash in it. I don’t remember the exact setting for it I have used, but I guess it has been around 1/8 power! I have closed a bit the umbrella, because I wanted to restrict the light coming out of it a little, since I didn’t have the chance to use my softbox at that time! In this shot I am using the Canon 85/1.8 prime lens (I wanted to shoot there with the 135/2, but there was no way to get the model in full size) at wide open aperture F/1.8, as I wanted to get a little bokeh in the backgroud. I had to instruct the model to look at the umbrella direction to get some nice light on her face too!

Shot B. For the second shot I made 2 big changes, by adding abother light, and changing the focal length I was shooting! First since I was about to shoot it pretty wide this time, I wanted to put some light on the far side, so I set up another flash behind the model, a bare Nikon SB-25 with an CTO orange filter. I tried not to put much power on it, and as far as I remember it was at around 1/16 – 1/32 of power! Then as I mentioned, I had changed the lens to the wide zoom lens – Tokina 19-35/3.5-5.6, which is I know a weird thing to put on my Canon 5DMII, but that is another topic of conversation! I was shooting at ISO-500 here (it was 125 for the first shot) in order to get some softer transitions with the ambient light in the room too, and of course to save a bit my batteries, and shoot with faster recycle times! For this shot, the hairmakeup artist Rissa is holding the textile and I’m shooting from just above her!

GEAR:

Some other technical details: I already mentioned, I am using the Canon 5DMII camera for the photoshoot, and I am triggering the Canon 580EXII flash in both shots by Pocket Wizard II Plus attached to it, and a Photix Atlas trigger on my camera body. The second flash was triggered by Optical slave, since it was at a pretty visible range from the main one, and I had no issues with that. The sensor of the SB-26 is pointed at the Canon flash.

Since the Canon 135/2 lens was too long for this location to shoot fill size, I had to use the 85/1.8 one here, I used it quite a lot when I have been shooting with the crop-sensor camera Canon 50D, and I really recomend it as an affordable portrait lens for Canon. After I switched the fill frame, i purchased also the 135/2 lenses, and these two were used for most of my portrait works, with recently I think about 90% of them for the longer one! You can see a gallery with my 85mm used shots here: Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM, and a gallery of the 135mm shots here: Canon EF 135mm f/2.0 L USM. The second shot lens is a pretty cheap Tokina one, to see a gallery with photos taken by it click here: Tokina 19-35mm f/3.5-4.5.

Before introducing the crew that was involved in the photoshoot you can see the final 2 shots I have chosen here, I have a lot of other photos from this photoshoot, you can check the link to my Flickr album in the end of the article:

FINAL IMAGES:

THE CREW:

The Jacquard Textile for this photoshoot was kindly provided by the designer Arina Oda, and it had some really beautiful texture on it, that was so detailed that the screen is having issues displaying it, and you can see that when you change the size of the image, or move it around the screen! There was a moment in the photoshoot, that it was folded a bit, and I thought I will fix that in photoshop later, a big mistake for this textile, but good lesson for me! The textile design was wrapped around the model by the designers Akira Ito & Satoshi Shirakawa, you can see their work too in the credits section below, where I have inserted links to their websites as well! Model for the photoshoot is Kinako Kocteau, and the hair-make artist is Rissa! With this we are a really big team, that was pleasure to work with!

Of course these are not the only images we have from the photoshoot, I have uploaded more from it on my Flickr Gallery, with also some other location shots from the same day. You can see the full gallery here:

Thanks for reading the article, there is one more thing to put in the end, this project have been uploaded also to a Japanese website containing the works of different artists, called WHO DID IT?, here is the link to the gallery on that site: textile Arine on WHO DID IT?. With the sme team of creators we have one more project done, but I will be uploading photos for it in near future!

IN THE END

And now, I am preparing a series of new articles on some general topics, let me know which one of them you want to see first, so I get it ready earlier! Also other ideas are welcome too! Here are some of them:

Portraits at night / Lens article (I guess 135/2) / Portraits in the rain / Use of gels / Using backlight / One light setups / Shoots with just one umbrella / General shooting portraits / Can cheap lenses make good photos / Swing the camera shots / Using snoots / Shaped bokeh / … or any other idea welcome, post it in the comments, and I will see if I am able to write about it!

Of course I have lots of other shots, I will be writing, so I hope I can do it at least 2 times per week, so when you have time check it out again!
