Shooting it: Asuka in the Temple

Here is another shot of Asuka at the same location as the previous atricle I have uploaded here! It is the small and nice temple in Amagasaki, called Joonji (長遠寺) a location which we often use for the shootings with her! I have already uploaded this article on the Creative Lightbrary website, but this time I decided to have it also on my personal homepage just for my refference, you can check the other article also here: CLICK! Pretty often when we shoot together we don’t spend too much time, and it was the same in this case, as I think we have just spent around 30-40 minutes on the location, changing 2 spots on it! One of them had pretty good natural light, and on the other I used some lighting, so I will be talking about it in this article more! In the lighting section I will also post a link to the set with the other shots on my Flickr account!

Location

I already mentioned that we have been shooting at the Joonji Temple, and in the previous article about a shoot at the same location I was talking more about it, you can check it out here: CLICK! It is a nice small temple, where we can shoot without beeing noticed by lots of people! And most important is that it is a really beautiful spot! The model is Asuka, and she is one of the models I’m most used to, as we’ve been shooting together for more than 2 years at various locations, you can see a set with other of her photos here: CLICK!

Lighting & Gear

I am using my Canon 5DMII with a Canon EF 135mm f/2.0 L USM lens, and as you can see the settings it is set at wide open aperture, F2! It’s a one light setup, with the softbox set right from the temple on the ground. This was a bit difficult to manage, and I wish my flash stand could go a bit higher, but that was the only way to put it in this situation. The natural light was just enough to allow me to shoot at 1/200 sec at ISO100 and with wide open aperture – F/2 in this case, which gave me some really nice shallow DOF!

I am triggering the flash with a Pocket Wizard II Plus attached on it, and a Phottix Atlas trigger on my camera body, as recently I broke the hot shoes of all my PW2′s, can’t believe they make them plastic… lol and now I can only use them as receivers on the flashes, since then on the camera body I put Phottix Atlas – nice metal hot shoe! UPDATE: I already broke the Phottix Atlas trigger too… now I need to connect it with a different cable in order to trigger my PWs!

So in the end I would like to mention one more time about our new project called Creative Lightbrary! We started it recently with my friend Ognyan Dimitrov, and we are going to post everything connected to digital photography where we will cover our experience with different light modifiers, DIY stuff, lighting diagrams, post production, useful software and many other tips. Our main goal is not to teach but to give everything that is useful for your journey in the world of digital photography. Click on the logo to check it out! Also follow our Facebook page connected with the project to subscribe for future updates, and we have prepared already many things to post soon!
