Shooting it: Colorful Spiral

This time I’m having one hard strobist shot to talk about! It is taken at a nice location near Osaka, where I’ve been shooting a few times, and I guess you will remember it if you see this shot: CLICK, that made many people start asking me to shoot them there! Well, fine, but after a couple of times shooting there, and having another model asking me shooting there, damn I had to do something different! So this time I decided to do some strobist tricks in the night with some gels on my lighting. I really wanted to make the location look like never before, and I believe we did some cool stuff there!
Strobist info:
Canon 580EXII in 80×60 Gridded Softbox – Camera Right;Nikon SB-26 with a blue gel – Camera left;Nikon SB-26 with a red gel – Camera upNikon SB-26 with a blue gel – Camera right. See the diagram on the right for a view of the flash positions! The softbox Canon flash is triggered by Pocket Wizard II Plus. All Nikon SB-26s are triggered by Optical slave, as a kind of chain reaction!
Ok, as I already said, I was already pissed with shooting at this location in the day, so this time had to be different! I scheduled the shoot for some late time in the night, prepared some gelled flashes, and we were ready to shoot! You can see here some other favorite shot of mine I took at the same location but in a bit different light: CLICK

Lighting

Let me talk about the lighting, first for the main light here I chose to use a gridded 80×60 Softbox, as I didn’t really want the light from it to spill all over the place, that’s why I left my shoot-through umbrellas in my bag. That also helped me create some drama in the shot! But that was the easiest thing here to set up, then had to modify the colored lights for the walls and the stairs, it is really fun doing that stuff, isn’t it!? Well, I love mixing red and blue, so I went for it in this shot too, with couple of flashes with blue gels, and one with a red one. I placed them so I can have some kind of gradation between them, and to make it look like the viewer’s eye will go right in the center!

I’m using a Canon 580EXII as a main flash, and all my secondary flashes are from Nikon SB-26, I love them, because they have the built-in slave unit, they are powerful, and last but not least, they are pretty cheap! All the Nikons are triggered by Optical slave! I’m shooting with my Canon 5D Mark II with a Tokina 19-35mm f/3.5-5.6lens, some people would make fun with me if they see what kind of lens I’m putting on the Mark II body! lol I’m triggering the main flash with Pocket Wizard II Plus!

Well, this was a nice strobist play in the night, it is interesting to shoot as such a really dark location, and have some flash colored filters, because you can manipulate the background quite a lot! Here you can see the final image from the shoot!

In the end…

So in the end I would like to mention one more time about our new project called Creative Lightbrary! We started it recently with my friend Ognyan Dimitrov, and we are going to post everything connected to digital photography where we will cover our experience with different light modifiers, DIY stuff, lighting diagrams, post production, useful software and many other tips. Our main goal is not to teach but to give everything that is useful for your journey in the world of digital photography. Click on the logo below to check it out! Also follow our Facebook page connected with the project to subscribe for future updates, and we have prepared already many things to post soon!
