Shooting it: Hairmake & Body Art Photoshoot

Intro

This is a project of my hairmake friends we did together some time ago, I have another article from the same project, too I bet you’ve seen it, but here is the article for it too: click! It’s been a really hard work putting the blue stamps on  her face and the background as well, but definitely work as I really love that set of images! I’m using 2 light setup, I’ll write about it below! Well, for this shot I would say that either you love it or you don’t! 😉

Gear

Camera is Canon 5D Mark II nothing much to say about it! The lens is Canon 135mm F/2 USM

Strobe – I am using one light for this shot, the flash is Nikon SB-26 That was time when I have been using the old Nikons quite a lot!

Modifier – My modifier for this shoot is a DIY Beauty Dish, my friend had created it from a salad bowl and it’s a stunning light source!

Triggers – at that time I was using Pocket Wizard II Plus triggers!

Lighting

For this body art photoshoot I’m using a 2 lights, a DIY Beauty Dish as a main light from her right side, since I love how it’s light wraps on the face in close up shots! I also have a 45” shoot-through umbrella from her left side to get some fill light and make the background more evenly lit! So I’m using cross lighting! For this type of shoots I’m usually shooting with the 135mm F/2 lens which is giving some realistic shape of the face! For this shot I have closed the aperture to F/6.3, which you may have noticed I do not do very often haha, well this time wanted a bit more from that background to be in focus! I was probably shooting in hurry and didn’t have time to wait my Nikon SB-26s that I was using at that time to charge, so I raised the ISO to 320, and drop the flash power so I can get faster recycle times!

Final Results

Here are a couple shots from the hairmakeup body art shoot! My hairmakeup friends Yui Hirosawa & Toshimi Nakanishi made some really cool piece of art that for me was just easy to go and shoot it! By the way this photograph is also published on the 1x.com website, you can check it out here: CLICK!

In the end

Now, I am preparing a series of new articles on some general topics, let me know which one of them you want to see first, so I get it ready earlier! Also other ideas are welcome too! Here are some of them: Portraits at night / Lens article (I guess 135/2) / Portraits in the rain / Use of gels / Using backlight / One light setups / Shoots with just one umbrella / General shooting portraits / Can cheap lenses make good photos / Swing the camera shots / Using snoots / Shaped bokeh / … or any other idea welcome, post it in the comments, and I will see if I am able to write about it! Also stay tuned for my new blog section starting soon called “Strobist Diary” There I will talk about many of my off-camera flash techniques from basic things to some advanced stuff!
