Shooting it: In a Cage

Here is a photoshoot of my friend and model that I shoot pretty often, Misa. We were a pretty big team of people, having some fun time in the studio. In this shoot everyone is doing what they are best at doing, designer, make-up, hair and photographer! In the details of the shot down you can see all the lighting equipment I’ve been using as well as some information about the post-process I’ve done on the photo. On that day we had very limited time, that was spend most on the hair, make-up and dress so I had only about 10 minutes to shoot her quickly before we move out of the studio to the next location.

Strobist info:

Canon 580EXII in a 90×20 Gridded Softbox – Camera Left/Up, Nikon SB-26 in a 80-60 Softbox – Camera Right/Up, Nude Nikon SB-26 with an Orange Filter – Behind the chair. Softbox Flashes are trigegred by cheap chinese triggers. Nikon SB-26 behind the chair is triggered by Optical slave. Background Texture is added in post

Lighting

Starting with the lighting, I’m using 3 lights in the photo, I faced the model at the strip light actually and used that one as a main light here, at first I didn’t mean to do it in that direction, but sometimes things just happen, and that was the good angle here for me! With the strip box (90×20) being the main light here, I am also using my 80×60 softbox as some fill from the right side of her. It is set half power from the other softbox.

Also as you can see on the shot I’m using a flash below the chair, so I can have some nice distinction in the beautiful dress, and I think this light is giving quite a lot to the mood in the photo. I also got an orange filter on that flash to warm it up a little bit.

I am triggering the flashes in the softboxes with cheap Chinese triggers as this time the set of pocket wizards wouldn’t be able flash 3 of the flafhes I’ve been using, because one of them was on Optical slave and it the softboxes couldn’t see each other, so they both needed triggers. And as I already said the flash under the chair is optical slave triggered. I’m using my Canon 5D Mark II with a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM lens.

Post-Process

Here are some things I’ve done in the post process for this photograph, so first I’ve obviously removed the pictures from the wall as well as the lamp that I don’t think looked very good here, and was only making the background too busy with things I didn’t need. Secondly I have removed the wall from the right side of her, as it was shot in the corner of the room (that was such a narrow studio). And last but not least, I have added some texture in the background of the wall, as without it it just looked very flat and boring, so I hope in this way it looks more interesting! I can say that I’ve spent about 10 minutes to do those stuff. Actually soon I will make an article here about all my workflow for my shoots, from the shooting, to how I usually process them and what software I’m using, so stay tuned for it!

  1. […] This photo serves as a great example on a creative use of light. Aside from lighting the model well, a gelled strobe was placed under the dress and facing the camera to provide an orange glow… […]
