Shooting it: Stroboscopic Shoot (1)

Here is something I haven’t been uploading on my page by now! It is a photograph for which I’m using stroboscopic effect, which is quite interesting for shooting moving objects! I’m explaining in detail how I’m doing it and what equipment I am using for it! 

Strobist Setup

For this setup I’m only using 2 bare strobes, the Nissin MG8000, I will talk about them later in the article more! They are set on Multi mode, which is making the stroboscopic effect happen! I have set them on 3 Hz frequency, firing 9 times which makes it 3 fires in second for 3 seconds! At the Multi mode since the flash is firing multiple times in short time the power is limited, in this case to 1/8. Flashes are set up left and right from the dancer at relatively the same distance! I’m using Pocket Wizard III Plus to fire the flashes!

ニッシンのMG8000、マシンガンストロボを2台で左右からはさみ、マルチ発光モードで、ワンカットで撮影した作品です。屋外の広いスペースで撮影しています。ニッシンのストロボは記事の後半にもうちょっと詳しく紹介します。ストロボ両方はアクセサリがついてなくて、直当です。設定は3Hzを9回で、つまり1秒に3回の発光とのことです。それで合計9杯光ります。マルチ発光モードで発光数が短時間で多いので、パワーも限られています、この場合は1/8パワーです！ストロボの無線トランスミッターは「ポケット・ウィザード・III・プラス」です！

Gear

I’m using my Canon 5D Mark II, with Canon 135mm f/2 lens, the main reason for using it is to compress the background as much as I can! The camera is mounted on a tripod, which is pretty low on the ground, well main reason is I guess to prevent it from being too big part of the picture and the 135mm is giving me quite good perspective to go low! As I mentioned in the strobist section, I’m using Pocket Wizard III Plus as a trigger for this shoot!

その撮影ではキャノンの5Dマーク2を使っています。レンズはキャノン EF 135mm f/2 USMです。シャッタースピードはかなり長いので、カメラを三脚にのせて撮影しています。床の光をあんまり写真に入れてほしくないため、ローアングルで撮ってます！135mmのレンズを使う理由のひとつは背景をなるべく縮めて、余計な光を入れたくないからです！ストロボはポケット・ウィザードによって発光させます！

Stroboscopic Effect

This effect is one of my favorite things to do with strobes! I will summarize a few things you need in order to shoot with multi-flashes:

• A strobe that supports multi-flash mode (actually there is a way to do it without that, stay tuned for a stroboscopic photo setup I will be uploading shortly) Nissin MG8000 that I’m using for this shot has that mode, such as the new models of the Canon strobes, I’m not sure for the Nikons!
• Wide (long) enough space – you need it for good perspective, and also to make sure that the strobes are not affecting the background of your photograph. I personally want to start from a complete black box when doing stroboscopic pictures!
• Dark enough space – in many cases you might need quite long shutter speed, and I would want to have completely dark background even when I’m shooting with 3, 5 seconds of shutter speed! It is great if you have probably a gym to do that in order to shoot inside, but since I usually do it outside, i would most probably shoot in some industrial area where I could isolate some part with my 135mm lens and leave it dark! Of course you can close the aperture to F/8, F/11… but keep in mind that the more you close the more power you will need from your flashes! If I wanted to go from F/2 to F/2.8 in this case I might need another set of flashes, 1 on each side! Anyway there is a way to trick your flashes to gain more power, and I have some photographs with that trick, so I will be talking about it later in one of the next articles! Actually even this spot was not dark enough, and you can see some of the factories behind!
• A lot of flash power – I mentioned that in the previous points already, I need to say it now! In this mode since the flash is firing multiple times it is using a lot of power, so you have your maximum power that you could use decreased to 1/8, or 1/16 depending on frequency. Also it is much easier to shoot if you have an external battery pack, which I actually have for this shoot, 1 on each flash!

マルチ発光

私の好きな撮り方のひとつはマルチ発光です！マルチ発光で撮影できる条件をいくつか書いてみます(たぶんこの説明では上記の英語の文章のほうが詳しいと思います)

• まずは、マルチ発光モードが入ってるストロボが必要になります！(入ってなくてもできる方法は実はありますが、それは後ほど別の記事で説明します) この撮影で使ってるニッシン・マシンガンは入ってます。それ以外は、大きなメーカーの最新のストロボも入ってます(前使ってたキャノン580EXIIははいってました！
• 広い(長い) スペース – 余計なもの・光を防ぐために、多々しがちょっと長い単焦点レンズを使っています！それで、全身で撮影できるようには10～15メートルが必要になります！そして、ストロボの光が背景の影響しないように、後ろもかなり長い場所もあったほうがいいです！私が好きな撮り方としては、まずは背景が真っ暗・ブラックボックスになる状況を作ることです！
• 暗い(なるべく真っ暗)スペース – こういう撮影では長いシャッタースピード使うことが多くて、そして何秒間でも、背景が真っ暗に写る背景が望ましいです！室内だったら、ジムなどがあればいいかもしれないですけど、私がだいたい屋外で撮影してるので、暗い工場の近くのスペースなどを使うことが多いです！それで、135mmのレンズで真っ暗にできる背景を探しています。もちろん、もうちょっと絞って、真っ暗にする方法があるかもしれないですけど、この写真のF/2.0からたとえばあと一段階絞って、F/2.8にするためには、ストロボが後両サイドひとつずつが必要になります！F/8、F/11などにするためにどれだけ必要になるか自分で計算してください！実は、もうちょっとパワーを得るためのトリックはありますが、それはまた別の記事で説明します！
• フラッシュ・パワー – 先ほど言ったとおりに、マルチ発光で撮影するときに、フラッシュパワーが制限されます！短時間で発光数が多いため、1/8、1/16になる場合があります！それで、外付けバッテリーパックがあればすごく助かります！上記のトリックでパワーが1/4, 1/2にもできますが、それはまた別の記事で書きます！

Nissin MG8000 Strobe (Machinegun Strobe)

This strobe is a monster, and I’ve never used something as compact and powerful as the Nissin MG8000! Firstly it’s guide number is 60, well that’s what most of the big makers’ high end flashes have too, but it has something that no one has, and it’s the anti-overheat thing! Have you tried using your strobes at full power and after certain numbers of fires you need to give it a rest since it’s too hot? My Canon 580EXII used to hate me for this, and I already have the front panel burned, so recently anytime I use it at full power I could feel the smell… I also had one Nikon SB-26 explode during a shoot after too much pressure! With the Nissin MG8000 you can just keep on shooting, and it’s fine! If you do it without battery pack it might take some time to recharge, but having the battery pack on can let you shoot in less than second at 1/1 power, and never worry about your flash getting hot! Such a great feeling!

It’s size it slightly bigger compared to the other flashes in that class, it’s a bit longer, and the head is a little bigger. It has a bright LED colorful screen, which is also rotatable (something that I personally don’t really need and it’s the first thing I disable after I touch the strobe! Another think it does not have unfortunately is a dial button to control the power, and you need to press the buttons left & right to change your power setting! Apart from that that strobe is really incredible!

Another think to keep in mind is the color temperature! Compared to the other strobes Nissin MG8000 is a little cold, and you might need to raise your Kelvin white balance number, personally for me I need to go about 200K – 300K higher compared to the Canon and Nikon flashes I’ve been using before that! It’s also easy to fix that by adding that number of CTO filter (guess about 1/8 CTO) But another awesome thing is that after using your strobes for thousands of times it will anyway change it’s temperature a little, which the Nissin strobe does not do (that’s what Nissin people say, I’m still about to reach that number! 😉 Soon I will do a whole article explaining more about the Nissin MG8000, stay tuned to it!

このストロボを最初に使ったときはほんとにすごいと思いました！コンパクト・ストロボで、かなりパワーフルです！ハイドナンバーは60で、ほかのメーカーのトップストロボとは変わらないけど、マシンガンがそれとは別のものを持ってます、それはオーバーヒートしないことです！昔から使ってたキャノンの580EXIIもフル発光1/1で使ってたときは、何回か光ると休憩させないとすっごく熱くなってました。そして、使ってたニコンのストロボは一回撮影中に爆発したこともあります。つまり、長く1/1パワーで撮影するときに「煙のにおい」がするということです！ニッシンのMG8000はそんなことがまったくないです、かなりフル発光で撮影してますよ！まったく気を使わずに使い続けても熱くなったことはないです！バッテリーパックをつけるとフル発光は1秒以内でチャージします、それでも問題はないですね！ただ、バッテリーパックがないともちろん、チャージは5秒ぐらいかかります。

サイズはちょっと大きいです、ほかのストロボよりは長いと、発光部もちょっと大きいです。LEDカラー画面は見やすくて、横も縦も見れます(自分的に回転はいらなくて、まずその機能は消します、まぁ、長く普通にたてで使ってるので、横になったらちょっと違和感があります) パワーを変えるときは、左&右ボタンで変えます！ここはダイヤルになったらいいな、とも個人的に思います！

もうひとつ大事なところはカラー温度です！ほかのストロボに比べて、ニッシンのマシンガンストロボはちょっと温度が冷たい、青いです。今までに使ってたストロボは確か200K～300Kぐらいで冷たくなります！(普段使ってたCanon & Nikonのストロボに比べてます) もちろん、オレンジのカラーバランスコレクションフィルターつけるとほかのストロボとのバランスができます！ただ、ほかのストロボは長く使うと、カラー温度がどうしても変わるらしいけど、ニッシンによると、このストロボは何万回光っても、温度が変わらないそうです！私がまだそこまでは使ってないです！もうちょっとでニッシンMG8000だけのレビューも作るので、またそこはストロボのもっと詳しいことも書きます！
