Shooting it: Rainbow Stripes

My next journal entry will be about one project we are doing with my friends, who are making some really interesting make-up artwork, and I’m honored to have the chance to take the photos of their work! I will insert their profiles in the end of the article as well! Now this one was… awesome, and something I’ve never seen before. I can’t believe how they managed to to something so beautiful with a bunch of straws. This is the first of the shots in that project, I will upload other interesting things in the following weeks, as we are still shooting other things!

I really loved the idea of my friends and it was so interesting to do that shoot. They spent a couple of hours fixing all the straws on her head, and painting her skin in the colorful stripes, and I spent that time thinking how to lit her in that situation. Actually the photoshoot lasted only about 20 minutes! As a background I had a 1.3 meter wide white backdrop, but shooting her on white was not what we wanted to do, so I thought that we play with some gels for the background.

But let me first talk about the key light, that was the first time I was using a Beauty Dish for my photoshoots! And actually this beauty dish was  a DIY one, made by my friend Darren, and I got it as a present from him! He literally used a dish to make it, and it is really awesome piece of light modifier, a proof that even without spending lots of money you can create interesting things! I was also using a fill flash behind her with a Ring Flash, but it doesn’t play that significant role in all of the shots here, anyway it’s there!

Now the background was lit by some gelled flash, and on the featured shot here it has a blue filter, on some other shots from the day I was using even gradient of 2 colors, but in the end I thought that the blue one will be my shot! The background is pure white paper, and I wanted to turn it into some dark color, so I had the model about 3-4 meters away from it, and we kept the lights down so they don’t have any effect on the background. As I had some difficulties on focusing, I asked my friend to lit the model with a torch so I can focus!

As I already said, the photoshoot actually lasted about 20 minutes, so I had to tweak the lights and the ratio between them pretty fast, and I think there is no need to say that all my flashes are in Manual mode!

I am triggering the flashes with a Photix Atlas Trigger on my camera body which fires the Beauty Dish and the Ring Flash as they have a Pocket Wizard II Plus attached. The backdrop flash is triggered by Optical Slave. Recently as I had all my Pocket Wizard hot shoes broken down, I’m using them only as receivers, and I purchased a Photix Atlas tranceiver to trigger them! I’m using my Canon 5D Mark II with a Canon EF 135mm f/2.0 L USM lens.
