Shooting it: Zampa Misaki, Okinawa Shoot

Intro

In this article I will introduce some shots taken in the Japanese exotic island, Okinawa! That is one of my favorite locations to shoot, and when I go there I forget about my everyday life! For this photosession I’m using only one light for all the photos, and it is the same modifier for all of them – a 40 cm Beauty Dish which is quite handy to have on location! Take a look and enjoy the beautiful Okinawa sky!

Gear

Camera is Canon 5D Mark II nothing much to say about it! The lens is Canon 17-40mm F/4 for all the shots! I did quite a lot wide angle photos there

Strobes – it’s a simple setup with only one Canon 580EXII for all the photographs! I have it also powered by a battery pack so I can shoot quicker at high power

Modifier – My modifier for this shoot is a 40 cm Beauty Dish, it’s a nice tool that is good to use in windy locations!

Triggers – at that time I was using a friend’s Chinese radio trigger, I don’t remember much about it!

Lighting

I am using only one light for all the photographs in this article, probably because of the strong wind too, I wanted to keep things simple! So I’m with a 40cm Beauty Dish for all of them! You will see 2 lighting setup shots, well I had just tweaked the light a bit for all of them! I am using a Canon 580 EXII Strobe and a battery pack to be able to charge faster at high power settings! I’ve been trying to place the light a bit higher than her pointing below so I can get nice even light! There is an assistant holding the light stand, and I direct him for position and light power! To be honest I’m never sure what are my power settings at this kind of situations, I just check the shot on the back of the camera and direct the assistant like “Change 2/3 stop up / down…” etc. Right now I’m using the Cactus V6 trigger, which lets me control the flash power from the camera attached trigger!

As I mentioned already, I am using the Canon 17-40mm F/4  lens for these shots, basically I’ve been shooting as wide as I can! The trigger this time I had to borrow from y friend, so I don’t remember what exactly it was!

Final Results

Here are 3 of the shots from this photoshoot! all of them taken with wide angle! Simply here is some example what you could do with only one light in this case it’s a shoot-through umbrella! Model in the photoshoot is Yuzuki Aizawa! And the location for it is Okinawa, a spot in Osaka that is really famous with it’s cherry blossoms, which unfortunately don’t last very long! Usually it’s only around 2 weeks, and that was one of the last days for the season!

As you can see on the second setup here are two images from that same lighting setup, the only thing I change is the shutter speed, and it changes the whole image of the sky! I change it from 1/80th to 1/6th sec, quite big difference, isn’t it? This is how I decide my exposure in many cases! I might actually go somewhere in the middle, depends on my idea!

In the end

Now, I am preparing a series of new articles on some general topics, let me know which one of them you want to see first, so I get it ready earlier! Also other ideas are welcome too! Here are some of them: Portraits at night / Lens article (I guess 135/2) / Portraits in the rain / Use of gels / Using backlight / One light setups / Shoots with just one umbrella / General shooting portraits / Can cheap lenses make good photos / Swing the camera shots / Using snoots / Shaped bokeh / … or any other idea welcome, post it in the comments, and I will see if I am able to write about it! Also stay tuned for my new blog section starting soon called “Strobist Diary” There I will talk about many of my off-camera flash techniques from basic things to some advanced stuff!
