Shooting it: Mixing color filters at night

Intro

For this strobist article I will be showing how to get some colorful stuff with a really dark and far background that at first glance doesn’t look to be easily modified by strobes! But it is interesting to see that in some cases if you turn your strobes straight to your camera and leave them slightly out of frame that can make some really interesting things!

Gear

Camera is Canon 5D Mark II nothing much to say about it! The lens is Canon 135mm F/2 USM

Strobe – I am using 2 lights for this shot, the flashes are Canon580 EXII and Nikon SB-26

Modifiers – I’m only using color gels, without anything else!

Triggers – at that time I was using Pocket Wizard II Plus trigger for one of the flash and optical slave mode for the other one since I only had one wizard!

Lighting

For this shot I’m only using 2 back lights with color filters to kinda modify the background with some colors! There is no main light to lit the model from the front side, it’s all coming from the color gelled strobes! They are turned straight to the camera, and I have left them slightly out of frame to create that soft look and gradient in the color mixing! I’m triggering the Canon strobe with Pocket Wizard II Plus, and since I only had one at that time the other strobe is set at Optical slave mode! The lens is Canon 135mm F/2 and I’m at wide open aperture – F/2 and ISO is 500! I will upload another shot below with just a slight change in the orientation of the strobes, all other settings are exactly the same, see how big difference can get by just a small manipulation!

Final Results

Here is the final image I like most from that photoshoot, with the strobes creating that soft gradation background! Mixing colors in this way can really help creating interesting results in dark locations by adding this kind of color tint to your photos! Well, pointing the strobes directly at you can be really interesting thing to do!

In the end

Now, I am preparing a series of new articles on some general topics, let me know which one of them you want to see first, so I get it ready earlier! Also other ideas are welcome too! Here are some of them: Portraits at night / Lens article (I guess 135/2) / Portraits in the rain / Use of gels / Using backlight / One light setups / Shoots with just one umbrella / General shooting portraits / Can cheap lenses make good photos / Swing the camera shots / Using snoots / Shaped bokeh / … or any other idea welcome, post it in the comments, and I will see if I am able to write about it! Also stay tuned for my new blog section starting soon called “Strobist Diary” There I will talk about many of my off-camera flash techniques from basic things to some advanced stuff!

Slide film gives us the same colors every time. Slide film leaves nothing to interpretation when printed, projected or scanned, which is why pros who shoot color shoot slides. We get the color we want on-film, and every other stage in the production process will preserve and reproduce these colors.
